We Are Currently Looking For A Senior Structural Engineer

Griffiths and Taylor Ltd. is a small but growing structural engineering consultancy based in the south Norfolk market town of Diss.

We undertake a wide variety of design and consultancy work including small domestic extensions and loft conversions; multimillion pound new build houses; feature staircases & balustrades for institutional type buildings; portal framed industrial and agricultural buildings; moving and stationary theatre structures; offshore installations and works to listed buildings.

Our domestic work can be found all over Norfolk and Suffolk whilst much of our architectural steelwork design is for new commercial and residential developments in central London (including Soho Place, UCLE Marshgate, and London bridge station).

We work closely with our customers and strive to produce practical, well-engineered solutions. The relationships we have built with our regular clients over the years is a source of great pride to us.

We are looking to recruit a practical engineer with particular experience in Eurocode structural steelwork analysis. For the successful candidate there is the potential to play a major role in the future of the company with an employee ownership scheme.

Job Description:

A full time, salaried post working as part of a small friendly team in our air-conditioned office in Diss town centre. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the following.

  • Undertake appropriate analysis and prepare design calculations, drawings, and reports with little supervision, in a form that is consistent with the company standard and can be readily checked by another member of staff.
  • Deliver high-quality designs using materials including concrete, steel, masonry and timber. This role places a particular emphasis on competence and enthusiasm for steelwork analysis, ranging from detail design of connections to complex analysis of a wide range of structures.
  • Undertake site investigations and attend site meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and other construction professionals regarding projects.
  • Represent the company at design team meetings with clients and other construction professionals.

Applicant Characteristics/Experience.

  • Knowledge and experience of the design of steel structures to the relevant Eurocodes is a key attribute.
  • The ideal candidate will be familiar and experienced with the use of 3D and FEA software (we use RFEM from Dlubal GmbH) as well as working with Excel spreadsheets. Ability to producing drawings on AutoCAD LT and would also be of use.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience working on UK based projects using the appropriate design codes.
  • Whilst it is not a requirement, being a chartered engineer with the ICE or IStructE would be an advantage.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is important.
  • Strong IT skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office is important.
  • Hands on – we try to offer practical solutions to our clients focussed on achieving the required goal in as simple and buildable way as possible. Knowledge and experience of the actual building/fabrication process is essential, as is a helpful, problem-solving attitude.
  • Ability to relocate or commute to Diss.
